The new kid on the block – SoCo

As the summer heats up, we are looking at Barbados’ hottest new hotel on the block, SoCo.  This new 4* hotel on the South Coast is a boutique all inclusive that offers 24 rooms to its guests, with the fab option to have the whole hotel for your wedding party – we love this idea!  As it is right at the start of the Boardwalk, the location is perfect for romantic strolls in the early morning or evening, and the beach next door has the perfect white sand our brides and grooms love.  Boutique hotels are becoming more and more popular with a lot of our couples, who love the intimacy of a small hotel where you can get to know all the staff; combining this with the ease of an all inclusive seems to be a great idea that is going down a treat with our couples!

Right on the Boardwalk in Hastings on the South Coast of Barbados, SoCo has a great location…and it’s only a stroll away from the Haagan Dazs café!

The ceremony can be overlooking the beach and water, on a balcony that gives privacy to the bride and groom.  We recommend bright colours for your arch to really stand out against the blue sky, and give a real Caribbean feel to your wedding!

The ideal ceremony location – overlooking the beach and water, but you still have privacy as you are on a balcony of the hotel.

The hotel prides itself on its contemporary chic, which is reflected through the décor of the hotel, the rooms, and in the beautiful floral arrangements and cakes that are available for wedding couples.  Cakes and flowers are included in the wedding packages, with different arrangements available.  What could be better?  Well, when you book any of SoCo’s wedding packages you also have your Colorbox photographer included!  Just ask us for more information 🙂

The delicate beading and detail on the cake has just the right balance between traditional and contemporary, and looks amazing next to bright tropical colours in the bouquet.

The traditional Caribbean backdrop isn’t lacking either, with some amazing settings for your photos and videos!  From the classic palm tree to the shallows of the ocean, the sleek setting of the hotel looks amazing!

Top 5 tips for the perfect Caribbean destination wedding!

Happy Tuesday everyone!

This week we will be sharing our top tips with you for the perfect stress-free Caribbean wedding, including our must-have items to bring with you, what to ask your wedding co-ordinator, and our recommendations for personal touches to your big day.

Top 5 hints and tips for a perfect Caribbean destination wedding

771-Soco

1.  The most important thing a groom (and his male attendants and guests) can bring is a lightweight vest or undershirt to wear under his wedding attire.  The vest acts as a barrier between the skin and the shirt, preventing sweat patches, and actually makes you feel cooler – it’s true!  There are two styles we would recommend, the v-neck vest like this 2-pack from Marks & Spencer: http://www.marksandspencer.com/2-Pack-Classic-V-Neck-Vests/dp/B003BACR5C

This v neck vest is great to wear under a long or short-sleeved shirt.

Or, the tank top style vest like this multi-pack from Macy’s: http://www1.macys.com/shop/product/alfani-mens-underwear-ribbed-tank-top-5-pack?ID=489998&CategoryID=64885

This sleeveless tank top is great to wear underneath a short or long sleeved shirt.

Wherever you live, you will be sure to find something similar in your local department store, you don’t have to break the bank and you will also find the vests comfortable to wear when you go out for dinner in the evening during the rest of your stay.

2.  The most important thing a bride can bring along to her big day with her is…a soft flannel!  A flannel or small hand towel can be borrowed from your hotel, or brought with you, and is the best thing for removing beads of perspiration from the face between photographs.  Facial tissues will break when faced with sweat, and leave little bits of tissue on your face, so are not recommended in the Caribbean heat.

For a personalised look you can order an embroidered flannel or hand towel, with budget, hand-crafted and luxury options available. You can find some beautiful arty hand-crafted personalised hand towels on www.etsy.com, such as these fabulous Mr & Mrs hand towels with palm tree detail:

For luxury towels and flannels head to Goodwin & Burgess http://www.goodwinandburgess.co.uk/embroidered_lettering_towels_flannels.php  You can select the material you would like to have your names embroidered with, including funky floral and classic check designs:

You can have custom text to really personalise your choice of hand towel or flannel.

3.  Tame your tresses!  Although wispy face-framing tendrils look great in the salon, when you are sharing your moment with your husband-to-be on the beach, overlooking the Caribbean sea, you don’t want to be continuously moving hair out of your eyes and mouth. You can still have the romantic up-do or rolling waves you are dreaming off, just ask your hairdresser to gently pin your hair away from your face so that you can say those vows without a mouthful of hair, and stay cooler in the heat.  Ladies with short hair look great with a short swept fringe.

4.  Order in advance; check with your travel agent and/or wedding co-ordinator if you have any special requests before you arrive to avoid disappointment.  This piece of advice covers a large range of things, and can ensure you have the day of your dreams!  For example, if you are terribly shy but would love a beach wedding, we would very much recommend having an early morning wedding – all of the beach scenery with less of the on-lookers.  If you are dreaming of having a magnificent sunset after your ceremony, you would be best choosing a wedding location on the West Coast of your chosen island.

Remember that Caribbean islands tend to be small, so you will need to book your suppliers and any special options for your wedding day in advance – this is especially true if you have chosen a memorable date for your big day, such as Valentine’s day, or 11/12/13.  This might include having a bespoke photo and video package, having a dove release during your ceremony, or having something to impress your guests such as limbo dancers or stilt walkers.

Stilt walkers make an impressive way to entertain your guests between courses at your reception!

5.  Bring decorations, accents and table decorations with you, and order well in advance if possible.  Props, special confetti, and fabulous accessories are easy to buy on the high street or order online at home, but are not so easy to get hold of in the Caribbean.  We love these cupcake wrappers and silver butterfly decoration at Nathan and Joanne’s wedding at Turtle Beach:

You can also bring some great accessories to enhance your photo and video shoot, like the great ‘Peace, love and Sandy Feet’ prop that Nicky’s sister bought for her and Andy’s wedding at Crystal Cove:

Introducing…Couples Barbados

Hello blog fans,

As promised this week we will be featuring a couple who have recently got married at the new Couples resort in Barbados!  Couples have some fabulous hotels in Jamaica, and have now launched their latest offering to adults looking for a Caribbean getaway, Couples Barbados.

Formally Almond Casuarina Beach, Couples have completed extensive works on the hotel to put it firmly on the South Coast map, and you can see how much today’s couple Steven and Claire enjoyed their big day below.  This happy couple made use of stunning colours to really make their day shine, and had a mixture of classic and fun photographs from which to choose!

The close up of the rings looks fantastic in black and white, as the eye is drawn to the centre of the photographs to focus on the ring.

Look how beautiful the bright reds in our bride’s dress are against the silver of the bridal party. This lovely shot of the couple kissing, with the family looking on, is a real favourite of a lot of our couples.

Now that we had the serious part of the day covered, the rest of the day focused on fun, fun, fun!

We love this shot of our bride and one of her gorgeous bridesmaids having a big giggle, with the sand, sea and surf making the perfect backdrop!

We did, of course, have some gorgeous romantic shots with the happy couple too…as well as a quick dress change in between!  Our bride Claire brought 2 dresses with her for the big day which we thought was a great idea: one structured dress in bold, tropical red, and one floaty dress in a classic white.

This long crop really draws the eye to the beautiful palm tree leaves above the couple, with just the sand, sea and sky behind them.

But Steven and Claire couldn’t keep their laughter at bay for long, and who are we to stop them?  You can see how much fun we had with this new Mr & Mrs!

Big congratulations to Claire and Steven, we are so glad that you love your photographs and video from your big day!

I hope you enjoyed seeing a small selection of our happy couple’s wedding photographs, and we’ll be back next week with more of our adventures.  Don’t forget to share!
